[ARCHIVOS DE LLEGADA]

“Solo bajo la gran maquinaria de la historia que habrá en el futuro se esconden los detalles que dan sentido a la vida, el brillo está en las suelas de los zapatos.”1
Koik Contemporary presenta ar[ch]ival [Archivos de llegada], exposición individual de Elizabeth Chang, artistx invitadx en residencia. La exhibición parte de una investigación de archivo sobre las historias de inmigración de la población coreana llegada a México en 1905.
La artista trabaja desde distintos formatos expositivos con los que hacer surgir una provocación acerca de la potencia ficcional de los archivos. El archivo no alberga solamente la memoria de los hechos ocurridos, sino las preguntas, contradicciones y también los sesgos que los acompañan. Abrir un archivo es permitir que salga lo que se escapa a él. ¿Acaso en las historias en las que prestamos atención no se esconde el eco de otras que dejaron de sonar?
La exhibición consta de cinco piezas en las que se propone un diálogo entre objetos, materiales y lenguajes. A través de letreros, ramas y sogas de los árboles de henequén, bolsas rellenas de arroz, básculas y tarjetas de inmigración, se muestran las complejidades económicas, geopolíticas, históricas e íntimas de las experiencias vividas en los procesos de formación de identidad individual y colectiva relativos a los movimientos diaspóricos entre Corea y México.
La artista abre la posibilidad con su obra, de pensar el archivo como algo que queda siempre abierto, encontrar en él gestos para hacernos nuevas preguntas sobre los hechos que ellos guardan e indagar sobre las narrativas de poder que los construyen. La exhibición nos recuerda que los grandes relatos históricos siempre descansan sobre pactos políticos, trabajo humano, cuerpos, experiencia vivida y desplazamiento.

“Only under the great machinery of history that will be in the future are the details that give meaning to life hidden, the shine is in the soles of the shoes.”1
Koik Contemporary presents ar[ch]ival, a solo exhibition by Elizabeth Chang, INVITED ARTIST in residence. The show is based on archival research on the immigration histories of the Korean population that arrived in Mexico in 1905.
The artist works from different exhibition formats with which to provoke a provocation about the fictional power of archives. The archive not only houses the memory of the events that occurred, but also the questions, contradictions, and biases accompanying them. To open a file is to allow what escapes it to come out. Don't the stories we pay attention to hide the echo of others that stopped playing?
The exhibition consists of five pieces in which a dialogue between objects, materials, and languages is proposed. Through signs, branches, and ropes from the henequen trees, bags stuffed with rice, scales, and immigration cards, the economic, geopolitical, historical, and intimate complexities of the experiences lived in the processes of individual and collective identity formation are shown relating to diasporic movements between Korea and Mexico.
With her work, the artist opens up the possibility of thinking about the archive as something that is always open, finding in it gestures to ask us new questions about the facts that they keep and inquire about the narratives of power that build them.
